The Great European Detour: How Detroit Techno Made Its Way to Europe

Explain the Sound - Episode 1 of 6

Techno is often portrayed as a European story. Yet Chicago house and Detroit techno emerged in the 1980s within African American and queer communities in the United States as spaces for freedom, experimentation, and resistance.

In this first episode of *Explain The Sound*, Marie-Maxime Dricot traces the history of this genre by following the journey of these musical styles to Europe. From Detroit to Berlin, from the United Kingdom to France, the episode explores the cultural exchanges that accompanied their globalization and the transformation of their narratives. Through interviews with Jeff Mills and extensive archival material, he examines how the Black origins of house and techno have sometimes been erased in favor of more mainstream narratives. He also explores the central role of Caribbean diasporas in the United Kingdom—from the sound systems of the Windrush generation to the jungle, garage, and grime scenes—to understand how a true continuum of sonic resistance has been forged.

While electronic music now plays a central role in global culture, this episode raises a crucial question: What remains of its history once its success transcends the context in which it originated?

"Explain The Sound " is an original podcast from MansA Radio dedicated to the African-descendant legacies of electronic music. This documentary series delves into the archives, gives a voice to pioneers, and examines the mechanisms of erasure, appropriation, and transmission that run through the history of house and techno.
