The Emergence and Rise of Invisible Voices: Who Tells the Story of House and Techno?

House and techno did not become global music genres simply because they spread. As their reach expanded, the narratives surrounding them also evolved. The media, institutions, record labels, festivals, and platforms all play a role in determining what is remembered, forgotten, or brought to light.

In this fifth episode of *Explain The Sound*, Marie-Maxime Dricot explores the mediating forces that have shaped the history of electronic music. She shows how programming, criticism, exhibitions, labels, and platforms contribute to constructing dominant narratives, sometimes even decontextualizing the African-descendant legacies of house and techno.

From the earliest specialized magazines to playlists on streaming platforms, this study examines how genres are renamed, categorized, and distributed. It also shows how streaming services and their algorithms often prioritize usage patterns and “moods” over historical connections, while human decisions remain at the heart of these systems.

At a time when music spreads faster than ever, this episode calls for better documentation of electronic music scenes, a diversification of platforms for sharing music, and a shift in the power to tell stories—so that the legacy of Black and diaspora music is not erased every time it enters the mainstream.
