From the Streets to Our Reality: The Origins of House and Techno

Explain The Sound - Episode 2 of 6

Duration: 43 min

"Explain The Sound " is a MansA Radio podcast dedicated to the African-descendant legacies of electronic music. This documentary series delves into the archives, gives a voice to pioneers, and examines the mechanisms of erasure, appropriation, and transmission that run through the history of house and techno.

Published on June 29, 2026

House and techno emerged in Chicago and Detroit in the 1980s within African American and queer communities. Long before they were grouped under the term “electronic music,” they were spaces for creativity, independence, and community.

In this second episode of *Explain The Sound*, Marie-Maxime Dricot traces the origins of this music to understand how it took shape before spreading across the globe. The episode chronicles the birth of a culture rooted in artistic autonomy, independent labels, and the passing down of its history.

From Motown to Underground Resistance, from Chicago radio stations to Detroit’s early record labels, this study shows how house and techno are inextricably linked to social, cultural, and political history. It also examines their spread to Europe, their transformation into a global phenomenon, and the narratives that have gradually decontextualized these genres while rendering some of their founders invisible.

At a time when platforms, social media, and algorithms are transforming sounds into content, this episode invites us to reconnect credit with memory and put creators back at the heart of the story.
