Bande sonore

A series of collective listening sessions to explore Afro-diasporic music, combining immersive experiences, cultural transmission, and shared memory.

Music plays a central role in the cultures we embrace. At MansA, it is seen as a living language, constantly reactivated to ensure the circulation of knowledge, stories, and imaginations from one generation to the next.

Bande sonore is part of this approach, offering collective listening sessions devoted to a specific musical genre, scene, artistic trajectory, or sound circulation. Each session brings musical practices into dialogue with the social, political, and cultural contexts that shaped them, from Africa to the Afro-diasporic worlds.

A space for sharing

Bande sonore invites listeners to listen differently: to take the time, to suspend the usual use of music as mere background noise, and to give full attention to the works, their stories, and their contemporary resonance.

Through these listening experiences, the program seeks to highlight often marginalized narratives, examine the conditions under which Afro-diasporic music is produced and transmitted, and create opportunities for artists, guests, and audiences to come together.

A session Soundtrack

Each session begins with a welcome and introduction, during which the theme of the meeting, the music being played, and the guest artists are presented. A booklet accompanies the listening experience and provides historical, cultural, and aesthetic references.

Collective listening is at the heart of the session. The pieces are played in their entirety, in an atmosphere conducive to concentration and shared attention, inspired by listening circles and oral transmission practices.

The meeting continues with an open discussion, allowing participants to share their feelings, personal stories, and analyses, and to incorporate the musical experience into a collective reflection.
