For this third and final Sound Vigil of the season, MansA welcomes Kenyan composer and performer Nyokabi Kariũki on Thursday, June 18, for a brand-new performance.

Through piano, vocals, electronic beats, and her trusty mbira, Nyokabi Kariũki offers a sensitive exploration of the concepts of memory, identity, and belonging. Her soundscape spans a variety of genres, ranging from contemporary music to electronic experimentation.

On Thursday, June 18, the artist will perform selections from his albums Peace Places: Kenyan Memories and FEELING BODY. Through this performance, she will explore the notions of connection and disconnection—in other words, what brings us together or drives us apart—as well as intimate experiences such as illness and the healing process.

Nyokabi Kariũki is a Kenyan composer, performer, and artistic researcher. Her ever-evolving sonic imagination spans numerous artistic fields: from film scoring to sound art, including field recordings, East African musical traditions, and songwriting. She performs on piano, vocals, and electronic devices, as well as using lamellophones from various regions of the African continent. Through her work, she seeks to create music that is both challenging and deeply meaningful, driven by a strong commitment to preserving and reflecting on African ideas, languages, and narratives.
