To mark the anniversary of her passing, MansA pays tribute to Maryse Condé with a listening session featuring excerpts from the podcast *Ségou*, adapted from her epic novel. This event, organized in partnership with France Culture, invites you to rediscover the saga of the Bambara people, in conversation with director Tidiane Thiang and actress Aïssa Maïga.
In tribute to Maryse Condé, who passed away on April 2, 2024, MansA invites you to a special listening session of the podcast *Ségou* (France Culture), an audio adaptation of her masterpiece. This is an opportunity to revisit the major work of the Guadeloupean writer, which continues to inspire reflection on the legacies of colonial history and slavery.
With *Ségou*, Maryse Condé presents her epic African saga, chronicling the rise and fall of the Bambara people in the 18th and 19th centuries. Between Timbuktu and Bamako lies a land like no other, lulled by the rumbling of the tams-tams and the songs of the griots. Ségou is the mighty kingdom of the Bambara—a people said to be invincible… or nearly so. In the 18th century, the ancient walls are on the verge of crumbling. Under the combined blows of the expansion of Islam and slave-trading colonists, suddenly everything begins to change. Starting with the noble clan of Dousika Traoré, whose four sons will each, in their own way, suffer the whims of African destiny…
After listening to an excerpt from the podcast, the evening will feature a discussion on the adaptation of the novel into an audio drama and, more broadly, on Maryse Condé’s literary and intellectual legacy.
Organized in partnership with France Culture, this listening session will take place with Tidiane Thiang, the podcast’s producer, and Aïssa Maïga, the narrator of the audio drama, in attendance.
