Frantz Fanon, asylum memoir at Espace 1789

On Wednesday May 28, Espace 1789 will host an evening dedicated to Frantz Fanon, a major figure in anti-colonial thought, with a screening of the documentary Frantz Fanon, mémoire d'asile (2002).

The documentary Frantz Fanon, mémoire d'asile (2002), directed by Abdenour Zahzah and Bachir Ridouh, traces Fanon's career, from his involvement in the Resistance during the Second World War to his role as chief physician at the Blida-Joinville psychiatric hospital in Algeria, where he introduced innovative therapeutic methods involving patients and nursing staff. The documentary highlights how his clinical experience and observation of colonial injustices nurtured his revolutionary thinking and his commitment to the National Liberation Front (FLN).

Through archive footage and testimonials from friends and colleagues, the film offers an intimate look at the man behind major works such as Peau noire, masques blancs and Les Damnés de la Terre.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Maboula Soumahoro, historian and president of Black History Month, who will shed light on Fanon's intellectual, political and personal legacy. The discussion will be moderated by Anaïs Antonio, programmer at MansA.

This evening offers a unique opportunity to explore the topicality of Fanon's thought, at the crossroads of psychiatry, the anti-colonial struggle and reflection on black identities.
