"Concerning Violence" at the Nouvel Odéon

"Concerning Violence" at the Nouvel Odéon

@ Göran Hugo Olsson / Happiness Distribution

Drawing on the writings of Frantz Fanon, narrated by Lauryn Hill, Göran Hugo Olsson’s *Concerning Violence* uses archival footage and numerous interviews to trace the history of African peoples and their struggles for freedom and independence.

Drawing on texts from *The Wretched of the Earth*, the film juxtaposes Frantz Fanon’s ideas with archival footage documenting anti-colonial struggles in Africa. Lauryn Hill’s voice accompanies the images in the English-language version of the film, while the archival footage and testimonies bring to light the experiences of those who fought for independence.

Through its aesthetic approach and archival work, *Concerning Violence* offers a fresh perspective on the mechanisms of colonialism and the violence associated with decolonization processes. The film thus invites viewers to reflect on the relationships between domination, resistance, and emancipation.
