Amílcar Cabral: In Support of a Radical Humanism

In the Footsteps of a Pioneering Thinker in African Decolonization

From October 16 to December 13, 2026, MansA is hosting an exhibition dedicated to Amílcar Cabral (1924–1973)—a revolutionary, theorist, agricultural engineer, Pan-Africanist, and one of the leading figures in the African independence movements. Nine contemporary artists engage with his ideas through textiles, photography, installations, video, and drawing.

What else does Cabral have to say to us today?

Fifty-three years after his assassination, at a time when our societies are grappling with issues of sovereignty, global inequality, population displacement, and ecological crises, his work continues to provide tools for reflecting on the connections between culture, power, and freedom. His approach—understanding the world in order to better transform it, and viewing culture as a force for emancipation—shapes a legacy whose reach extends far beyond the African continent to speak to all of humanity.

The exhibition puts the relevance of Cabral’s ideas to the test by contrasting them with the perspectives of contemporary artists.

The Artists

Nú Barreto, Diogo Bento, Filipa César, Monica de Miranda, Bento Oliveira, Hamedine Kane, Yuran Henrique, Sónia Vaz Borges, and Sarah Maldoror each give tangible form to a legacy that is still too often confined to specialized circles. Hailing from Portuguese-speaking Africa and beyond, they sketch a vibrant map of what Cabral called *a luta* —the struggle.

About the Exhibition

A series of related events will accompany the exhibition: talks, panel discussions, film screenings, music, and performances. To complement this experience, MansA has enlisted rapper and producer Rocé to create the exhibition’s soundtrack. Details about the program will be announced soon.
