For this latest screening in the “Pan-African Film Archives” series, CinéMansA presents a screening of Chloé Aïcha Boro’s film *Al Djanat *. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the director and researcher Thierno Ibrahima Dia, exploring issues of law, custom, and family memory.
When her uncle dies, Chloé Aïcha Boro films the courtyard of the family home in Burkina Faso: a threat hangs over this place, where meetings and prayers are held, when some of the heirs claim to have rights to it under the law in force, inherited from French law, while others believe they can preserve the symbolic functions of the courtyard, which was bequeathed to them orally. Observing the situation, the film also broadens the perspective, offering a glimpse of a society largely confronted with this clash between law and customs. By also questioning her own status, having moved to France, the director unexpectedly weaves together a dense network of questions that make the case study all the more valuable.
